You’ve placed the order. The connecting rods are forged, machined, and inspected. Now what?

For Vietnam-based engine assemblers sourcing from Taiwan, the stretch between “order confirmed” and “parts on the assembly line” hides more surprises than most procurement teams expect. This guide covers the practical logistics — freight, packaging, customs, and timelines — so your first shipment doesn’t become an expensive lesson.

Freight Options

Sea Freight (Default)

Most connecting rod shipments between Taiwan and Vietnam move by sea. Transit times vary by carrier and season — confirm current schedules with your freight forwarder.

Typical Routes:

  • Kaohsiung → Ho Chi Minh City (Cát Lái): Roughly 4–6 days direct, 7–10 with transshipment
  • Kaohsiung → Hai Phong: Roughly 5–7 days direct, 8–12 with transshipment

These are approximate ranges. Actual sailing times depend on the carrier, route, and port congestion at the time of booking.

Shipping Modes:

  • FCL (Full Container): Best for large orders. A 20ft container can hold roughly 18–20 metric tons of connecting rods
  • LCL (Less-than-Container): Practical for trial lots, but typically adds several days for consolidation at both ends

Air Freight (Emergencies Only)

Taoyuan → SGN or HAN in 1–2 days, but at several times the cost of sea freight. Worth it only when your assembly line is about to stop. Negotiate an air freight clause into your supply agreement upfront — you don’t want to debate who pays while your line sits idle.

Packaging for Tropical Transit

Connecting rods aren’t fragile, but they’re vulnerable to three things in a Taiwan-to-Vietnam shipment:

Corrosion — Bare steel rusts within 48 hours in tropical humidity. Every shipment needs VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) wrapping and desiccant packets. For long-term storage, add rust-preventive oil coating.

Impact — Rods stacked without separators bang together during handling, nicking machined bearing surfaces. Use plastic dividers between parts, orient consistently (big-end down), and ensure nothing rattles inside the carton.

Weight — A pallet of connecting rods is deceptively heavy. Keep cartons under 25 kg for manual handling, use reinforced wooden pallets (not particle board — it absorbs humidity), and strap every pallet.

Before your first production shipment, request a packaging trial with 50–100 pieces. Inspect on arrival for rust, surface nicks, carton integrity, and desiccant condition. Fix problems now, not after 10,000 pieces arrive damaged.

Customs Essentials

Documents Your Supplier Should Provide:

HS Codes & Duties (General Guidance):

Connecting rods commonly fall under HS headings such as 8409.91 (spark-ignition engine parts) or 8409.99 (diesel). Duty rates and classifications change periodically — always verify the current HS code, applicable duty rate, and VAT treatment with your licensed customs broker before shipping.   • Vietnam MFN duty has historically ranged from 3–10% for these headings
  • VAT is generally applied on CIF value plus import duty

What Causes Delays:

Mismatched quantities between invoice and packing list (even by 1 piece), missing Certificate of Origin, wooden pallets without ISPM-15 stamps, or a declared value that looks suspiciously low. Use the same customs broker consistently — familiarity with port officers cuts clearance time significantly.

Realistic Lead Times

The timeline below is a rough planning guide — not a guaranteed schedule. Actual lead times depend on order size, material availability, shipping conditions, and customs processing. Confirm current timelines with your supplier and freight forwarder for each order.

  • Production (forging + machining + finishing): Up to 90 days
  • Inspection + packing + port delivery: Approximately 3–5 days
  • Port handling + ocean transit: Approximately 6–14 days
  • Vietnam customs + last-mile delivery: Approximately 3–7 days
  • Estimated total: Up to ~120 days

Plan for disruptions: Typhoon season (June–October) can add a week or more. Lunar New Year shuts factories for 7–10 days plus backlog. Consider carrying 8–12 weeks of safety stock during initial production, reducing to 6–8 weeks once the supply rhythm stabilizes.

Incoterms: Start Simple, Then Optimize

The Incoterm you choose determines where the supplier’s responsibility ends and yours begins.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): Best for first-time importers — your supplier handles freight booking. Start here for your first 2–3 shipments.

FOB (Free on Board): You control the freight. Transition here once you have a trusted Vietnam-side forwarder — typically saves 5–10% on landed cost.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Supplier handles everything to your door. Convenient but expect an 8–15% premium.
